Defensible space basics

Defensible space is the vegetation and combustible material managed around a structure so firefighters and the home itself have a fighting chance.

• Zone 0 (0–5 ft): noncombustible, no mulch piles against walls.
• Zone 1: lean, well-irrigated plantings; break fuel continuity.
• Zone 2: thin and space trees/brush per local guidance.

Active wetting systems work better when fuels are already reduced. Check county ordinances — rules differ across the West.
